With the province of Vancouver being a movie production hub, it is no wonder that you may see a celebrity or two roaming around. However, online, there is a list a kilometer long of famous people from Vancouver. Some are actors, singers or sports stars and they have one thing in common – they grew up in the same spot.
Bryan Adams is a singer who was popular in the ’80s and ’90s was grew up in North Vancouver. He went to Argyle Secondary and was in a band. His band traveled around and played for various high school events. By the time he was 15, he was performing in and around Vancouver. His first album came out in 1980, and he was widely successful. Adams is also involved in humanitarian work. He has done concerts to raise money for awareness of different causes. The Brayan Adams Foundation whose sole purpose is to help children worldwide receive a quality education. He believes knowledge is the key to everything. Even in 2019, he is still active with various causes and making music.
Pamela Anderson moved to Vancouver in 1988 to be a fitness instructor. She was discovered at a B.C. Lions game when she was put on the Jumbotron wearing a local beer company’s t-shirt. The beer company briefly hired her as a spokesperson. She moved to Los Angeles to be a model. She is most famously known for being on the cover of Playboy and as C.J. on Baywatch. Anderson has had many roles in Hollywood – some small parts and substantial movie roles. She has had rocky relationships and many marriages and engagements. Like Bryan Adams, Anderson is an activist. She is vegan and is a voice for P.E.T.A. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). One of the campaigns that she participated in was for the use of fur. Coming from small beginnings, Pamela Anderson has made a name for herself. Whether you like her or not, she has done great things for animals.
If you’ve seen any Back to the Future movies, then you already know Michael J. Fox. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta and moved around a lot due to this father’s job. They eventually settled in Burnaby. He was in Canadian television series Leo and Me at age 15. Soon after, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. He was on the show Family Ties for seven seasons. In 1991, at age 29, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Oddly enough, he was one of four actors on the set of Leo and Me that got Parkinson’s later in life. Since being diagnosed with the disease, he has been an advocate of finding a cure. Michael J. Fox received an honorary degree from the University of British Columbia in 2008. Fox is a true Canadian hero who is proud of his heritage.
Keep your eye out when walking around downtown Vancouver. You may see famous people that are originally from Vancouver or just in the area to film. Either way, you’re bound to see a celebrity!
