Maple Ridge, British Columbia is home to School District 42. There are more than 14,000 students attending classes each day. Within the district are seventeen elementary schools and five secondary schools. Each school site has an abundance of programs for the children to partake in. Maple Ridge is committed to producing individuals who are ready for the 21st century.

One of the programs highlighted in District 42 is Odyssey K-9. This amazing program initiates a partnership between home and school. The children are encouraged to work at their own pace while still following the province’s curriculum standards. Directors of the program help students to create goals every so often. Once the goals are met, they are revisited, and new goals are established. The revision of student’s goals allows the children to be successful. Children are in charge when generating their targets – if something needs to be altered, it is up to the learner to make the change.

Along with the regular curriculum, students are encouraged to attend field trips and partake in real-world experiences. This allows the students to encounter things and learn as they go.

Academics is not all that is available in District 42 schools. Robotics is an option that is offered to all students. They are given the opportunity to program and build robots to complete specific tasks. This allows the children to practice the 4C’s in their learning – communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. All of these skills are what a productive person in our society requires.

Another program offered in the schools is the arts. Whether it is creating masterpieces or performing in a play, these students have all of the possibilities to explore the artsy side of themselves. Recently, some of the students from the district had art displayed at a local art gallery. How exciting!

Secondary schools provide learning opportunities for adults as well. There is a chance to graduate with a high school diploma or learn the English language. You don’t have to be a child to reap the benefits offered at school District 42.
