Renovating your home is tough. That is said with a smile – a possible fake smile at that. You have to be patient. You have to have the most tolerance you have ever had. While the final product of renovating your home is quite amazing, the before part is when homeowners struggle.

When you begin renovating your house, you commence with high expectations. Your friend’s renovation took a few months. However, yours will only be a few weeks. Yea right. Most times, your timeline for your project never is what you hope it to be. Things always seem to happen, so you have to extend your completion date. Perhaps the foundation of the floor is cracked. To remedy this, it will cost more money and take up more time. Therefore, a planned renovation that was supposed to be three months ends up being close to 5-6 months. Again, find your serenity and stay there.

No one tells you when you start the restoration that you will be living in one area of the home. For instance, if you are renovating the kitchen, don’t plan on cooking any time soon. You will have to go out to restaurants each night. If the bedroom is getting a makeover, find another place to sleep. You will need to avoid the renovation site for the duration of the project.

The dust…oh, the dust. You will find a film of dust on EVERYTHING within proximity of your renovation. When you demo the area, it sends debris flying. You are always cleaning and wiping surfaces to maintain a semi-tidy home.

The fun part soon arrives halfway through the project. This is the time when you can go shopping! Pick out paint colors. Choose countertops or flooring. Make sure you shop around to get the best price. Also, don’t go with the first estimate. You may see something you adore at one home improvement store, but when you go to the next one, you will see the appliance you just have to have. Take notes and pictures as you browse the store. Go home and think about it. Once you have chosen the one, and then return to purchase.

Three-quarters of the way through, you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. That hole of a room begins taking shape. The floors are put in. The appliances are installed. The paint color is put on the walls. It is refreshing and looks exactly like you imagined. The entire time that you were sleeping on the couch or eating at random places doesn’t seem as if it took so long.

And then it happens…your renovation is completed. You start to wonder what you were even frustrated about in the first place. Your new space looks like it is out of the pages of the popular home improvement magazines. Who cares that your back is hurting and that you have gained 10 pounds. You have that brand new kitchen or bedroom suite that you have always wanted. All the stress and worry have disappeared. You are ready to enjoy your new space. Your home is now the haven you always knew it could be. It just needed a minor makeover.
